Spot the Stars with the date the 13th of Feb 2006 and falls on the eve of Valentine’s day was certainly an event to be remembered..

We have 5 stars who crafted their speeches for the International Speech Contest. Lim Hin Chong set the ball rolling with “Happiness is what we want.” Simon Soh returned to the club after a long absence and delivered “Is what is isn’t, what isn’t is?” Meanwhile, Ng Cheong Boon gave his version on “Searching for Success.” Then came Robert Hue who gave an interesting account of “Mother-In-Law”. Koh Teck Lee close the speech contest with his speech title “Face up with reality.”

The judges certainly had a challenging task in identifying the winners of the International Speech Contest.

Who were present at this event?....Our Area W3 Governor James Arokiasamy, ATMS and Past District 51 DPRO Lucky, ATMB and Past Division W Governor Ramdas Nayar, ATMB who came to support this event by being in the judging team headed by Lucky, ATMB.

We had 30% of the audience who were non Toastmasters and participated in the Spot the Stars Contest where 1 guest managed to match the official results of the judges in the International Speech Contest. The other winner was our President Hor Kam Peng.

After the refreshments, we moved on to the Table Topics Contest, the Contest Chair Celine, DTM gave an interesting topic “Life is like a box of chocolates” which lead 7 stars to try on their creativity with their interesting versions. We had a new member who courageously went for the contest. We had another ‘long lost member’ Robert Hue who was hesitant at first in taking part and finally got supportive senior members to encourage him to take up the challenge. Who are the other stars in this contest, they were Koh Teck Lee, Ng Cheong Boon, Simon Soh, Lim Hin Chong and Hor Kam Peng.

Besides, having 3 contests on the same evening, our President Hor Kam Peng managed to source from ACER for lucky draws where 2 guests and our member Simon Soh were the lucky winners for the evening.

Who were the winners for the International Speech Contest?

Champion - Simon Soh, ATMB
1st Runner Up - Ng Cheong Boon, CL
2nd Runner Up - Lim Hin Chong, ATMS

The winners for the Table Topics Contest were…….

Champion - Hor Kam Peng, ATMB
1st Runner Up - Simon Soh, ATMB
2nd Runner Up - Lee King Thim, CTM

Congratulations!!!!

The Champions and the 1st Runners Up for both the contests will deliver their ‘show’ on 11 March 2006 in the Area W3 International Speech and Table Topics Contest. Keep a date with them on 11 March 2006. Watch for the news on the venue of the contests.

We need to graciously thank our Organising Chair Gwendoline Gwen, CTM who tirelessly reminded and constantly encourage members to take part in the speech contests. Despite her busy schedule, Celine, DTM took up the role as Contest Chair and ensure the contestants were adequately brief on the contests.
Our Chief Judge Lucky, ATMB chose credible judges in his team and carefully brief the roleplayers. Our President Hor Kam Peng, despite her busy meeting schedule managed to get the assistance of another member to deliver the prizes and souvenirs from ACER on time for the contests. Our sponsors ACER, Berjaya Hotels and Resorts, C-Excel Training, Macsam Sdn Bhd, Mines Cruise Management and Saba Safety and Health Management who made their contributions for this event.
Of course, our cameraman, KC Leong, CL who ensure everyone were covered in this event. You could be on candid camera! Be sure to look out for photos taken by him.

Thank You to All, who have made this event, a success and memorable one.

Kudos!! To All Winners for this event.

In Honour of PDG Lilian Lau

Dear All,

It was an honour to serve the late PDG Lilian Lau as her District 51 Secretary 2001-2002. It was a most memoral period from the Installation in Hong Kong 2001 to the Celebration of District 51 as the Number 1 district in the world at San Antonio 2002, USA and the Hall of Fame in Singapore 2002.

Through it all,

...her passion for excellence
...her passion for integrity
...her passion for high standards
...her dedication and commitment
...her determination and drive
...her understanding and concern
...her inspiring leadership
...her firm belief that District 51 can "Create its Destiny"
was the fire that kept the District 51 torch burning right till the last moment.

The Destiny was created...
The Dream was crystallized
The Goal was achieved
DG 51 2001-2002 has created history
"District 51 is No. 1"

I know that PDG Lilian will Rest In Peace
I am glad that she will not suffer any more pain
PDG Lilian is free from the world's sorrows
I will miss her very much as mentor and friend.

District 51 Secretary 2001-2002

Message from District 80 Governor

It is with a most heavy heart that I bring news of our beloved Lilian Lau who has left us to be home with her Lord last night at 9:42 pm.

Lilian fought valiantly for 18 months against her illness. She had been diagnosed as having lung cancer, already in an advanced stage. Her incredible strength and resolve kept her going even though doctors had given her only a few months. The disease eventually spread to her brain.

She won great affection and admiration from all Toastmasters not only from District 51 which she served as District Governor from 2000-2001, but also from our international family & leaders. Her clarion call to "Create Your Destiny" inspired so many of us to set firm tracks in our pursuit of excellence.

As a member of the Advisory Board for District 80 this year, she was a constant source of encouragement and assistance to our current Executive Committee - all this despite the great discomfort of her progressively debilitating illness.

Lilian will rest at Blk 187 Bishan St 13 today (Sat 12 Nov) and tomorrow. The cortege will leave at 12:30 pm on Monday 14 Nov for Mandai Crematorium Hall 1 for the service at 1:30 pm.

No wreathes please. All donations will be given to Toastmasters International Smedly Fund.

May God's Blessings be upon everyone of you. Take good care.

Warmest regards,

Khong Chooi Peng DTM

Serving Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Singapore.

Club Meeting on 12 Sep 2005

To view photos, please click here.
As we moved into the 3rd month of the new term 2005/2006 under the leadership of our club President Hor Kam Peng, we have three new sign ups and one reinstated member to date.

Welcome on board our very new member - Christine

Are we going to be awarded the special ribbon from the district……..we certainly can, if only members will bring another two new signs before end of September 2005. With this development, we will also achieve one DCP goal in membership.

How was the mood in the meeting this evening?

There was certainly a demand for speaking slots; we have five C&L speakers and one ACL speaker. Only one C&L speaker could not attend due to last minute unforeseen circumstances.

The Table Topic session was replaced by Humor session where five members display their lighter side. Even the ‘timid’ VPE Gwen participated in this session.

We had two Icebreakers, Sabapathy and Yap Mei Han took ‘the cat of their bags’ to allow us discover about them. Then we have eager Bryan who spoke on ‘Hurricane Katrina” while Alfred spoke on near encounter ghostly experiences in Kota Baru.

Kam Peng spoke on the subject Assertiveness and did a role-play with Hin Chong as the contractor. In the role-play, Hin Chong was supposed to realign the tap that was causing Kam Peng distress. Finally Kam Peng managed to convince via the skills of Assertivness to follow her plan.

The Best Humour speaker this evening was ATMS Lim Hin Chong.

Strangely, there were two best assignment speakers and evaluators. This indicated that the audience of 20 was attentive to the speakers and evaluators that led to the double results.

The Best Assignment Speakers were Alfred Koh and Bryan Lee.

The Best Evaluators were DTM Loghandran and DTM Ong Siew Chien.

Good nite.

Don’t forget to attend another exciting meeting on 26 September 2005 at 7 pm.

Club Installation Night 2005 Sep 16

Reporting from the desk of VP Public Relation

It was 16 September 2005, at 6 pm on Friday evening, I could see the sky as blue as the ocean and the sun decided not to set yet but continue to shine into the Sri Mutiara Restoran in Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam. At 6.30 pm, there were only a handful of guests, where were the rest? Indeed, most were caught in the Friday after-office traffic jam.

The guests slowly trickle in to fill their places in the restaurant and by 7.15 pm all the guests were looking forward for an exciting evening. Our EMCEE David Anthony came all the way from Cyberjaya despite the stressful jam; he made to the venue and started the ball rolling at 7.30 pm.

The event started off with the Negara ku and the highlight of the event was the Installation Ceremony of the EXCO for the term 2005/2006. Our Past President Koh Teck Lee, ATMB was the Installation Officer. Our Immediate Past President Kanniaseelan Varathan, ATMB and his team were the outgoing team, pave the way for the new President Hor Kam Peng, ATMB and her team to run for this term.

President Kam Peng gave a motivating presidential speech and managed to stir interest from the guests on our projects i.e. Children programme. She closed her speech by encouraging members to show support of Club activities and reinforced by the song “Stand By Me.” As the song filled the ears of everyone in the restaurant, the first course on the Chinese Course Dinner was served.

A few days before the event, President Kam Peng and I were concerned on whether KGPA, being a non-Chinese organization could deliver a real Chinese Course Dinner. We were concerned whether we could get fresh steam Seabass or good fried rice. I even told the Organising Committee that I would be at the kitchen to accompany the chef. On the day of the event, I quietly slipped into their kitchen to see whether the Chinese chef was present. He was busy preparing the quality dishes and trying to jive with our time to present each dish The Operations Manager even asked me the time to cook to our first dish. With this assurance, I am confident the guests will certainly enjoy a sumptuous Chinese Course Dinner just like at the Chinese Restaurant.

KGPA really did deliver a real Chinese Course dinner where every dish was served on time, according to the programme. We had good steamed Seabass and Thai Fried Rice, which was different from the normal Chinese Course Dinner. They certainly did a good job in their delivery. They even offered beer sold at their member’s price @ RM7.50 net.

We must thank our President Kam Peng for the variety of lucky draws. She got 30 prizes. We have 62 guests. The winning chance of the lucky draw was 1 for every 2 persons. Our members manage to win the grand prizes. We had Robert who won the grand prize, i.e. a pair of executive chairs. Our Immediate Past President won the tallest packed hamper. Our long lost member Cheng Hoon came specially to watch the Comedy skits won RM50 Parkson Voucher. As for me, I won the bestseller book worth over RM100.

Another highlight of the evening: Comedy skits by Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters and collaboration with Spot-on Theatre.

The show started with our talented Seelan, ATMB displayed the sound of the train coming into the station. The show began with “The Beauty and Kingdom.” Chow Mun Yuen, CTM portrayed the Beauty from China. She danced and moved to the rhythm gracefully. Guess who was the emperor? None other than our dark and handsome, Seelan, ATMB with his sparkling yellow robe, black moustache above his lips and yellow beard on his chin. Ismail, CTM looks so adorable like a Baba from Melaka with his fan and silky, pleated ponytail on his shoulder. He was playing the role of a eunuch fanning the Emperor. Hah! Hah!

The train then moved on to Penang. The team quickly took their positions in BORIA where K Loghandran, DTM took the lead.

Next was the Cabaret where Fong Muntoh or better known as Montie gave us the ”meow song” and another melodious number to allow us to visualise the scene at the cabaret.

The finale of the Comedy skit was ‘Butterfly Lovers” which was suppose to be a sad story but with the creativity of the Director and the cast, we could certainly see some lighthearted moments in the show.

KC Leong, CL the scholar in Butterfly Lovers came on stage, flicked open his fan with a loud sound so powerfully just like Jet Li portraying the famous Wong Fei Hung in action. Our beautiful Mei Han, the heroine was so natural in switching roles. One minute, a lady; the next minute, gentleman. Then there was her father, Robert Hue, CTM with his fierce looking face wearing his "Cina Ah Pek" clothes. Yeah! Our soft-spoken Robert was a no joking father last night. Robert sliced KC with a sword as if he was slaughtering a chicken. Butterfly Lovers, adapted by Koh Teck Lee, ATMB was meant to be serious in memory of the legendary Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai. Kudos to our Director, DTM K Loghandran! He metamorphised the legend into a hilarious comedy which got everyone in stitches.

Well done! The Organising Committee for making it a success last night, a night not to be forgotten! I would also love to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone in the cast. Your show was an eye opener to many of the guests. Never did they realize that Toastmasters, other than “can talk much” (CTM also means Competent Toastmaster), they can also act to an audience. I could see the audiences were laughing their hearts out. For audiences that have children below 12 years and they also enjoyed the show. We certainly have a wonderful and talented team.

Special thanks to our guests from Toastmasters who have assisted in the Lucky Draws session:

Yeoh Cheng Lim, CL - President Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club

Zaharah Ibrahim, ATMB - President Pidato Perdana Toastmasters Club

Lakhmichand, ATMB - Past Dist51 DPRO / Past Div P Gov - KLAdvanced and Bangsar Toastmasters Club.

Kudos to Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters Club.

VPPR signing off.
Goodnight.

Report on Club Meeting - Monday 11 July 2005

Dear Esteemed Members,

11 July 2005 was our 1st club meeting with the new President Hor Kam Peng, making her first Presidential speech.

Who was there?

For the first time, in Speakers' Dream Toastmasters Club Meeting, we have 28 members and guests. Every corner of the room was filled with interested audience with their eyes looking eagerly and ears tuned in for what's in store for the evening.

We had 3 Distinguished Toastmasters, Celine, Loghan and Siew Chien. 95% of the Past Presidents of the club were there to support the club meeting. Our baby club HELP University College Toastmasters and Sunway Toastmasters were also present.

What's for starters?

Our President gave us a tip on a simple looking plant called the 'plucking plant' translated from Cantonese. She prepared a drink from this plant and share a tip for cleansing and maintaining good health with a simple and inexpensive method by planting a plant.

To add flavour to the starters, we had DTM Loghan who add humor by relating a story.
"A man spend RM2,000 on equipment for scuba diving. When he was in the sea, he saw a man with no equipment at all, was seen 'swimming' in the deep sea.
He thought he was so foolish to spend so much money while the other joker went under water with nothing. He scribble a simple note "how did you do it without any diving equipment?"

The man replied " You Idiot, I am drowning."

Toastmaster of the Evening, DTM Celine, took us through the evening by making sure the guests and the members on the proper protocol of Toastmasters.
She provided us with the "Main Meal" of the meeting. Table Topics and Assignment Speeches.

Table Topics was undertaken by Duncan, our new CTM with his creative topics like,
"Tell us your secret, how to live up to 500 years"
"If you were allowed to bring yourself to 10 years old, what would you want to change"
The speakers were wonderful as they use their creativity and tact to manage their topics.

Assignment Speeches, we had two eager beavers to start off their journey in Toastmastering, King Thim and Eng Yau.
Followed by a dramatic and interesting topic on 'Adultery' by Alfred Koh.
To complete the session on Assignment Speeches, we had two members from HELP to remind us on the journey of Success in their perspective.

What's for F&B?

There is no caterer, it was certainly a different scenario from the normal catered food of fried noodle and a snack. We had Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizzas from PIzza Hut. Desserts and cake contributed Lim Hin Chong, and bananas by Teck Lee.

What was the 'mood' at the close of the meeting?

We manage to stir interest in our guests, as they enquired for our membership forms. We also had 'long lost members' who have now renewed their interest to join the club - Joseph Sunder.

All of us left the meeting ....feeling energise and an evening well spent.
By DTM Ong Siew Chien

Till end .......next update is on 25 July 2005.
